“Shōgun” is an action-packed adaptation of the 1975 bestseller by James Clavell that takes us to feudal Japan in 1600. English sailor John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) and his crew, the last ship standing of five that left the Netherlands for the East, are shipwrecked on the Japanese coast and captured by a local samurai clan. The region is embedded with Portuguese Jesuits, natural enemies of the protestant Blackthorne who attempt to have him killed by the Japanese as a pirate. Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) is one of five competing samurai warlords attempting to ascend to the position of shōgun, and is facing attempted impeachment by his rival, daimyō Ishido (Takehiro Hira). Toranaga recognizes Blackthorne’s value to his political position and refuses to execute him. Blackthorne finds himself a pawn in a game he can’t understand, with few allies other than the beautiful Catholic convert translator Mariko (Anna Sawai) from Toranaga’s household.
